Public Services and Social Reproduction in the Neoliberal City: A Labor Perspective

Since the onset of the capitalist transition in former Yugoslavia and the introduction of neoliberal reforms, social reproduction has been placed increasingly at the mercy of the market – from the flexibilisation of work to the commodification and marketisation of public services and goods. Combined, these transformations and their material manifestations continue to produce extreme inequality, impoverishment and disempowerment of the working majority. In order to counter these developments and hegemonic narratives, new political solutions are needed , which would guarantee the high quality and availability of public services, and also provide social reproduction beyond the market. High quality of jobs, decent labor standards, and new policy solutions designed on the local municipal level would be at the heart of these progressive visions.
