Wastes of Progress: capitalist frontlines in post-socialist peripheries

Waste–one of the most tangible byproducts of capitalism–transforms post-industrial sites into vast waste-processing landscapes in Bulgaria, where communities, already living with extensive anthropogenic damage, are confronted by a new reality of living with the ‘discards of discards’–the communities themselves becoming discarded in the process. This talk will look into the transformation of Devnya valley and the global making of a local environmental catastrophe.
